Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred – Matthew 4:1

The Lord Jesus Christ is our Master and we’re His disciples. He’s our example. We have to follow Him and walk in His footsteps. 1 John 2:6 says, ‘He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also to walk, even as he walked.’ We should therefore imitate the Lord Jesus Christ in every way.

Since He fasted, so should we. Some have been Christians for years and years and have never even fasted one day. Not only is that being disobedient to the Lord Jesus Christ, it’s also very dangerous. If the Lord Jesus Christ, the sinless, perfect and infallible Son of God needed to fast to deal with the devil, what more us?

Christianity is a war, satan is our enemy and his attacks are ruthless. To win, you need to discipline your flesh and fasting is God’s preferred method of keeping the body under. Matthew 6:16 says, ‘…when ye fast…’ not if ye fast. The Lord Jesus Christ therefore never presented fasting as an option. Fasting is a must for a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s good to pray but it’s even better to fast and pray.

PRAYER

Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, help me to walk in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus Christ and fast. Help me to keep my body under so that I may not sin against you. Amen.
