Northern Ireland should not be confused with the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a sovereign European country whereas Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, the same as England, Wales and Scotland.
Northern Island comprises both Protestant unionists and Catholic nationalists. Nationalists want a united Ireland where both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will be one people again. Nationalists want an independent Northern Ireland divorced from the UK similar to what the Republic of Ireland is. Unionists want to remain within the United Kingdom.
The recent UK divorce from the European Union has emboldened nationalists. Brexit has demonstrated that a battle for sovereignty is worth fighting.
Let’s see if the prophesied protests will be linked to a push for Northern Ireland independence.
