MORE STRIKE ACTION. WE NEED TO PRAY AGAINST BREAD RIOTS

Glory to God! I trust you’re well and denying yourself, taking up your Cross daily and following the Example of the Lord Jesus Christ so you can rule and reign with Him in this world and the World to Come.

On 11 February I shared the following:

BEGINNING

South Africa is entering strike season. Mass protests will begin to erupt everywhere and shake the nation. University campuses will once again explode in protest and even threaten the success of the 2022 academic year if not curbed.

Bread and butter issues will also once again take centre stage. Youth unemployment, inequality, poverty, poor service delivery, corruption, poor education, food inflation, electricity hikes, fuel costs, party politics and the like will be the focus of the nation.

Since giving this Word, we’ve seen strike action intensify throughout the nation. Tembisa, a township north of Johannesburg, has just been rocked by riots and looting. What started as protest action against high electricity tariffs has degenerated into widespread violence as residents vow to continue rioting until their demands are met.

My concern is the effects high food prices will eventually have on the poor in South Africa, and in deed the rest of the world. Food riots or bread riots as they’re called have been known to bring governments to their knees. The Arab Spring brought regime change to a number of Arab nations about a decade ago.

South Africa has a long history of strike action. We have to pray and ask God to stop this nation descending into chaos because of what’s coming.
